PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for people who are, or seek to be, employed in an area where communication with others as individuals and in groups is vital to effective functioning.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Identify and explain the key factors used to understand the target audience of the communication.
  • Discuss the core components of effective verbal communication.
  • Illustrate the effective elements of effective written communication.
  • Communicate with a range of stakeholders. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that the learner is competent in Communication at NQF Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Communication concepts include: sender; receiver; message; noise.
  • Audience factors include: literacy and/or numeracy levels; language preference; size; accessibility.
  • Communication methods include: verbal - one-on-one; radio; TV; small or large groups and written - e mail; newspapers; letters; posters; reports; presentations.

    3. The basis for confirming the effectiveness of verbal communication is explained by referring to an appropriate feedback process.

    4. Each example of a verbal communication method identified is compared to this description and a judgement made as to whether it is effective or not.

    3. Oral presentations are made to groups using available, applicable technology. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or will assess this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
  • Therefore, anyone wishing to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
