PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for people who are, or seek to be, active an area where group facilitation is key to service delivery.
It introduces the learner to the concept of facilitation and provides an understanding of the key concepts, tools and behaviours involved therein.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Discuss the meaning of the concept of facilitation
  • Identify and explain the key concepts in facilitation
  • Identify and discuss the key behaviours of an effective facilitator
  • Facilitate a project meeting. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in communication at NQF Level 4. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Other roles played in groups include: leader; director; manager; presenter.
  • Group processes in local economic development include meetings; workshops; virtual round-tables.
  • Tools used by facilitators include audience analysis; gaining participation; questioning techniques; platform skills; sequencing content; using handouts; visual aids; a personal learning log.
  • Techniques include brainstorming; learning wall/ participlan; role-playing; presentations.

    1. Key behaviours are identified that constitute the repertoire of a competent facilitator. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Each behaviour is discussed in terms of the most appropriate time, circumstances and tools and techniques to apply it, when facilitating a group process by referring to examples from own work context. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Facilitation behaviours are compared and contrasted with the behavioural repertoires of other roles used in local economic development group processes and reasons given for the success or failure of facilitation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Facilitate a project meeting. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. A meeting is facilitated to discuss progress with a local economic development project. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Behaviours on the part of members that hinder progress are eliminated and/or reduced using applicable facilitation skills. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Participation by all members is encouraged to ensure optimal participation of stakeholders and efficient progress of meeting. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Confirmation is obtained from individuals who have special tasks to perform resulting from decisions taken at the meeting. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or will assess this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQ, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

    4. Therefore, anyone wishing to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
