PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is in the core category of the NQF Level 4 National Certificate in Footwear technology. Learners assessed competent against this standard will be able to secure and protect footwear materials through determining characteristics of leather and synthetics, measuring materials and determining quantities and needs of materials. Learners will also be able to secure materials to prevent shortages as well as conduct basic material tests. Learners involved in any elective area will use this standard. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners will have attained the NQF Level 2 National Certificate in Footwear processes. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
The standard applies to all processes within clicking, closing, making, bottoms, finishing and dressing, and pattern cutting and design.

Determining physical characteristics of leather and synthetics to check suitability to purpose.

Measuring materials to determine efficiencies.

1. Footwear materials are accurately measured in a plant to establish their efficiencies according to specifications.

2. Sample materials are matched with specifications and control sample as required by standard operating procedures.

Determining quantities and needs of materials to continue production.

1. Material requisitions including the quantity, description and goods received are accurately compiled in compliance with standard operating procedures.

2. Quantities and needs of material are determined beforehand in order to prevent unnecessary downtime where stock referencing systems are consulted.

3. The consequences of not having enough stock to continue production is clearly understood and therefore prevented.

Securing materials to prevent shortages.
