PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This standard is in the core category of the NQF Level 4 National Certificate in Footwear technology. Learners assessed competent against this standard will be able to secure and protect footwear materials through determining characteristics of leather and synthetics, measuring materials and determining quantities and needs of materials. Learners will also be able to secure materials to prevent shortages as well as conduct basic material tests. Learners involved in any elective area will use this standard.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Learners will have attained the NQF Level 2 National Certificate in Footwear processes.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE
The standard applies to all processes within clicking, closing, making, bottoms, finishing and dressing, and pattern cutting and design.

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Determining physical characteristics of leather and synthetics to check suitability to purpose.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. The physical characteristics of leather materials and synthetics are clearly understood and explained in accordance with standard operating procedures.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
2. Material types are explained in compliance with industry norms.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Measuring materials to determine efficiencies.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. Footwear materials are accurately measured in a plant to establish their efficiencies according to specifications.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
2. Sample materials are matched with specifications and control sample as required by standard operating procedures.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Determining quantities and needs of materials to continue production.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. Material requisitions including the quantity, description and goods received are accurately compiled in compliance with standard operating procedures.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
2. Quantities and needs of material are determined beforehand in order to prevent unnecessary downtime where stock referencing systems are consulted.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
3. The consequences of not having enough stock to continue production is clearly understood and therefore prevented.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Securing materials to prevent shortages.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. Materials are secured beforehand in order for production to continue applying standard operating procedures.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
2. Materials are secured timeously to prevent possible shortages applying standard operating procedures.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5
Conducting basic material tests to determine quality standards.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
1. Basic material testes are conducted timeously according to industry and international benchmarks in order to maintain quality standards.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
2. Quality reports are interpreted to explain all findings and recommendations in compliance with national and international standards bodies systems.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
