PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is for learners involved in fundraising. In particular, this Unit Standard will enable the learner to:
  • Design promotional material for organizations and/or fundraising ventures
  • Draw up letters of appeal
  • Analyse responses to letters of appeal to determine their effectiveness
  • Maintain an updated record of letters of appeal and responses 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication at NQF level 3.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Design promotional material for organizations and/or fundraising ventures.

    Includes but is not limited to, fliers, posters, information sheets, notices, envelopes for letters, video cassettes, audio cassettes, advertisements, but excludes letters of appeal 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Information that can be used to promote an organization/project is gathered from as wide a source as possible and a summary made for use in promotional material 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The types of promotional material that can be used for an organization and/or a fundraising venture are identified and an indication given of the type of organization/fundraising venture each is most suited to. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Three different types of promotional material are designed and produced for fundraising ventures.

    Draw up letters of appeal. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Letters of appeal for donations from three different fundraising organizations are analysed to determine the types of information they contain and a summary made. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The letters of appeal are analysed for style, wording, tone and content and a decision made as to their suitability for their target audience and the fundraising venture. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A letter of appeal is drawn up for a particular fundraising venture, which includes the required information and using the correct, style, wording and tone for the target audience. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Analyse responses to letters of appeal to determine their effectiveness. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All responses to a letter of appeal are grouped into categories to be analysed to determine the effectiveness of the letter. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The responses that were successful are analysed to determine why they might have been successful. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The non-responses and negative responses are anaysed to determine why no responses were received and if there are any trends evident in the non-responses 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A report is written in which the response to an appeal is analysed with an indication given of what might have been successful and what caused non-responses. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Maintain an updated record of letters of appeal and responses.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A database/filing system to store letters of appeal and responses is designed using the systems already in place in an organisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Letters and responses are filed so that they can be easily retrieved when required.

    Assessment of this Unit Standard should be contextual and practical.
  • Assessors must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that represents the sector in which the learner is employed and which has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • The mechanisms and requirements for moderation should be applied in accordance with the requirements of the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment should include both formative and summative assessment.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

    Learners can demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by understanding that poorly written letters of appeal, or inappropriate promotional material or the wrong target group can negatively affect the success of a fundraising venture.
