PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is for learners working in the fundraising sector and places emphasis on the importance of detailed follow-up to all contributions received and the need to implement various follow-up strategies

In particular, this Unit Standard will enable the learner to:
  • Draft and write personalised letters of thanks and acknowledgement for all donations received
  • Establish a method of record-keeping of all donations received and responses made
  • Develop a system of periodic contact with all donors throughout the year
  • Find ways of recognising and honouring donors 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners wishing to access this Unit Standard should be competent in Communications at NQF Level 3.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Draft and write personalised letters of thanks and acknowledgement for all donations received. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A list of all donors who require letters of thanks is drawn up indicating how much money was donated and when 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Particular personal matters which have to be included in individual letters of thanks are identified for inclusion in the letter. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A draft letter of thanks is drawn up indicating the appreciation for the donation, the use to which the funds will be put, and confirming the benefits for both the donor and the beneficiary. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Establish a method of record-keeping of all donations received and responses made. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A method of record-keeping of donations is developed and used for donations received for a particular fundraising event. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Copies of all letters of thanks and follow-up letters are filed using the system appropriate to the organisation and the fundraising activities participated in. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Develop a system of periodic contact with all donors throughout the year. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A system to send newsletters and/or other relevant material to all donors is developed so as to keep donors and potential donors informed of progress with the project. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An update on the specific project of donor support is drawn up and distributed to all on the mailing list. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A personal report-back system to each donor is developed and implemented for a specific project.

    Find ways of recognising and honouring donors.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The different ways in which donors can be honoured are identified and an indication given of which type of fundraising and which type of donor each is most suited to. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A plan of action to honour donors is drawn up for the year which includes all forms of tribute. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A schedule of functions to honour donors is prepared indicating best time of the year, approximate cost, venue, etc. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Letters of honour, citations and medals are designed for use in honouring donors and an indication given of who would be the recipients of each.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
