PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
The qualifying learner is capable of:
Integrating knowledge and understanding of Occupational Health and Safety Legislation and Regulations, protective paints and compounds for the preparation of steel surfaces techniques for the removal and replacement of defective structural steel members with skills for planning, organising and controlling a range of activities associated with the maintenance of steel structures in accordance with safety legislation and site procedures. The competencies contained in this unit standard form part of the Elective learning of this qualification and extend beyond the mechanical completion of tasks associated with the maintenance of steel structures and contributes towards the professional development of the learner by equipping him/her with enhanced knowledge and skills for the effective planning, organising and controlling of general steel structural maintenance activities in a construction context. This unit standard further contributes to socio-economic transformation in that learners will be able to undergo RPL-assessment and receive recognition for previous learning and experience, thereby enhancing the employability and career prospects of learners within the Civil Engineering Construction field. |
