PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit is for people who operate a vehicle mounted loader in a non-production situation. People credited with this unit are able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the vehicle mounted knuckle boom loader.
  • Prepare and start-up a vehicle mounted knuckle boom loader.
  • Operate a vehicle mounted knuckle boom loader.
  • Shut-down and maintain a vehicle mounted knuckle boom loader after use. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic safety in forestry operations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of mechanical timber handling equipment. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Competence can be demonstrated on any truck or trailer mounted knuckle boom loader. Self-propelled knuckle boom loaders, which are mounted on their own under carriage, are excluded from this unit.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate knowledge of the vehicle mounted knuckle boom loader.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safety features on the machine are identified and their purpose explained according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Consequences of operating the machine outside its operating, reach and lifting capabilities are explained in terms of the effect on safety and damage to the machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Maximum weight and diameters of logs able to be loaded are identified according to manufacturer's requirements.
    Service intervals of the machine are stated according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Hazards specific to operating vehicle mounted knuckle boom loaders and ways to minimize these are explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Stability, suitability and state of repair, proximity of other workers and machines.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare and start-up a vehicle mounted knuckle boom loader.

    Tools and equipment required are checked for completeness and serviceability, and corrective action taken, if required. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Fire extinguisher, grease gun, wheel spanner, hydraulic hoses, tools as required for specific operation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All personal protective equipment required, is checked for functionality and used in terms of company policy and legal requirements.

    Pre-operational checks are performed according to appropriate checklist.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Providers of learning and assessors must be accredited in terms of the requirements of the Forest Industries Education and Training Authority. Apart from FIETA accreditation and assessment requirements, the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993) and the Driven Machinery Regulations must be met before certification.
