PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit is for people who extract timber to a landing using a cable yarder in a production situation. People credited with this unit are able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the cable yarder.
  • Prepare and start-up the cable yarder for extraction.
  • Prepare for extraction.
  • Operate a cable yarder to extract timber to a landing in a production situation.
  • Shut-down and maintain a cable yarder after use.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic safety in forestry operations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of wire ropes, rigging accessories, anchor systems and rigging in cable yarding operations.
  • Prepare anchors, rig intermediate supports, tailtrees & a tower and set up working cables for a cable yarding operation.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of cable yarder extraction.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Competence can be demonstrated on either highleads or skylines. Demonstration of competence will take place "on the job" in a production situation. Competence can be demonstrated either on tree lengths or log lengths or bundles

    Demonstrate knowledge of the cable yarder.

    Safety features on the cable yarder are identified and their purpose explained according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Consequences of overloading and operating the yarder outside its capacity are explained in terms of the effect on safety and damage to the machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Maximum loading capacity of the cable yarder and wire ropes is explained in terms of manufacturer's requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Service intervals are stated in terms of manufacturer's requirements.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare and start-up the cable yarder for extraction.

    All personal protective equipment required, is checked for functionality and used in terms of company policy and legal requirements.

    Operational requirements are explained in terms of extraction routes, landing locations, special management zones and timber flow and production target.

    Work area is checked for hazards and corrective action taken according to standard operating procedures.

    Operate a cable yarder to extract timber to a landing in a production situation.

    Yarder is controlled within safe operating limits specified by the manufacturer.

    Timber damage and breakage are minimised, extraction complements other phases of the operation, work rate meets predetermined production target, planned extraction routes are used, timber is released and positioned on the landing as arranged.
