PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit is for people who choke and dechoke timber during extraction with a cable yarder in a production situation. People credited with this unit are able to:
  • Prepare for choking and dechoking.
  • Choke timber for extraction with a cable yarder.
  • Dechoke timber on the landing. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of choking and dechoking timber.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic safety in forestry operations 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Demonstration of competence will take place "on-the-job" in a production situation. Competence can be demonstrated on tree lengths or log lengths or bundles in either a highlead or skyline configuration.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safety procedures during haul-out, choking, breaking-out, haul-in, landing of the load and dechoking are explained according to the Handbook section 11. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Only those applicable to the choker setter and dechoker person.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Common hazards during haul-out, choking, breaking-out, haul-in, landing of the load and dechoking are explained according to the handbook section 11. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safety requirements applicable to the operation are explained to minimise the effect of hazards on the operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    All personal protective equipment required, is check for functionality and used in terms of company policy and legal requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Maximum loading capability of the cable yarder and wire ropes are explained in terms of manufacturer's requirements.

    Choking equipment and hauling ropes are checked for suitability, serviceability and corrective action is, taken if required. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Choking equipment is assembled onto hauling ropes in terms of the requirements of the operation and the manufacturer.

    Operational requirements are explained in terms of extraction routes, slopes, landing locations, special management zones, timber flow and production target.

    Work areas are checked for hazards and corrective action taken according to standard operating procedures.

    Safe work practices are demonstrated throughout preparation.

    Communication with the cable yarder operator ensures safe and effective operation during haul-out, choking, breaking-out and haul-in.

    Operating procedures and safety requirements are adhered to during the haul-out.

    Operating procedures and safety requirements are adhered to during choking.

    Timber to comprise a load is selected according to position and size to ensure optimal load size and ease of operation.

    Timber is choked and break-out effected in accordance with operating procedures.
