PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who receive and open polybags and decant these into a charcoal chute according to standard work procedures, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Receive Polybags filled with Charcoal
  • Open polybags and decant into charcoal chute
  • Dispose of empty polybags

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:

    i) Competency in communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at an ABET level 2
    ii) Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to ABET level 2 requirements 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    a) The scope of the Unit Standard covers:

    i) The whole environment that can be described as charcoal manufacturing.
    ii) All the personnel involved in all activities of charcoal manufacturer.
    iii) All the material that is handled and processed in this work area of charcoal manufacture.
    iv) All the company's work procedures and safety regulations relating to this work area of charcoal manufacturing.
    v) All the relevant OSHACT stipulations, which have bearing on, charcoal manufacturing and all other activities in this work area.

    b) The context of the Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF level 1 in the activity of charcoal manufacturing.

    c) The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 1, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in charcoal manufacturing / is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 1 to 4. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Receive polybags filled with charcoal. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All personal protective equipment is worn in accordance with OSH regulations and work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Ensure all tools and equipment are working to safety requirements and if a problem is detected the Foreman is notified as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The full charcoal polybags are stacked in designated areas. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An understanding of stacking procedures is explained and demonstrated as per safe work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The polybags are removed from stacks and transferred to working area as required by production plan. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Open polybags and decant into charcoal chute. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The wire tier is cut with a side cutter as per safe work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The cut wire is removed and disposed of into receptacle provided as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The open polybag is decanted into chute as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Dispose of empty polybags. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The polybags are removed from work area and stacked in the designated area as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The polybags must be bundled in lots of 20 as per work instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures

    UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    A demonstrated understanding of:

    i) Charcoal manufacturing principles and practical application in a charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing environment, in addition with knowledge of Safety/Environmental/Health issues. 

    UNIT STANDARD DEVELOPMENTAL OUTCOME 
    Operate as an efficient unit in carrying out the productions plan/programme in the packing shed.

    Identify and verbally report problems he/she detects in the production process while performing his duties, to his/her immediate line manager.

    Work efficiently and safely as a motivated member of a team in the packing shed. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING 
    Collect, clean, store and deliver tools and instruments utilized in the packing shed in an effective and efficient manner. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING 
    Listen, understand instructions and verbally report in an effective manner to his/her line manager.

    iii) Strictly according to the organisation's work place procedures.
