PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who load kilns with correct size timber in order to achieve an optimum production rate and offload kilns, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Prepare kiln.
  • Load kiln.
  • Off load kiln. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Competency in communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at an ABET level 2.
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing production process in their workplace.
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 1 requirements. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of the Unit Standard covers:
  • The whole environment that can be described as charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing.
  • All the personnel involved in all activities of charcoal and/or briquette manufacturer.
  • All the material that is handled and processed in this work area of charcoal and/or briquette manufacture.
  • All the company's work procedures and safety regulations relating to this work area of charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing.
  • All the relevant OSHACT stipulations, which have bearing on, charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing and all other activities in this work area.

    The context of the Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF level 2 in the activity of charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing.

    The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 2, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 2 to 4. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare kiln. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All personal protective equipment is worn in accordance with OSH regulations and work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Ensure all tools and equipment are working to safety requirements and if a problem is detected the Foreman is notified as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The kiln is clean and ready for loading as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The timber is available and stacked close to the kiln as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The timber is carried to the kiln one at a time as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Load kiln. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The kiln is loaded in a set pattern in order to ensure an optimum burn rate as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The timber is cut with the saw into smaller pieces to be used as fillers in the kiln as required. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The filler pieces are inserted through the hole provided in the kiln roof until full as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Off load kiln. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Sufficient polybags are on hand to be used in the offloading of the kiln as per production requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The polybags are opened and checked for any defects as per quality standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The polybags are filled with raw charcoal as per production requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The polybags are moved to the designated area for storage and the remaining polybags stored for future use as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Work area is cleaned and ready for the next production run as per work instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures. 

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    A demonstrated understanding of:
  • Charcoal manufacturing principles and practical application in a charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing environment, in addition with knowledge of Safety/Environmental/Health issues. 

  • UNIT STANDARD DEVELOPMENTAL OUTCOME 
    Operate as an efficient unit in carrying out the productions plan/programme in the kiln area.

    Collect, clean, store and deliver tools and instruments utilized in the kiln area in an effective and efficient manner. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING 
    Listen, understand instructions and verbally report in an effective manner to his/her line manager.
