PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who issue starch and maintain stock tallies according to standard work procedures, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Control Receipt of Starch Supplies
  • Issue Starch
  • Maintain Starch Stock Levels

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:

    i) Competency in communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at an ABET level 2;
    ii) An understanding of the basic activities of the charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing production process in their workplace;
    iii) Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to ABET level 2 requirements. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    a) The scope of the Unit Standard covers:

    i) The whole environment that can be described as charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing.
    ii) All the personnel involved in all activities of charcoal and/or briquette manufacturer.
    iii) All the material that is handled and processed in this work area of charcoal and/or briquette manufacture.
    iv) All the company's work procedures and safety regulations relating to this work area of charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing.
    v) All the relevant OSHACT stipulations, which have bearing on, charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing and all other activities in this work area.

    b) The context of the Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF level 1 in the activity of charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing.

    c) The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 1, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 1 to 4. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Control Receipt of Starch Supplies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All personal protective equipment is worn in accordance with OSH regulations and work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Ensure all tools and equipment are working to safety requirements and if a problem is detected the Foreman is notified as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The correct amount of starch has been delivered as per production requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The bags are checked to ensure that they are undamaged and whether they meet quality company requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The pallets are correctly stacked in an orderly and safe manner as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Each pallet must be correctly packed with the right number of bags as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Issue starch. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Check requisition and issue the required number of bags as per production plans. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The starch requisitions are safely delivered to the correct plant as per requisition. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Maintain starch stock levels. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The starch stock levels are maintained on an on-going basis as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The stock levels must balance with the incoming and outgoing issues and reports completed as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    All operating tools must be in good working order as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Work area is cleaned as per work instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures

    A demonstrated understanding of:

    i) Charcoal manufacturing principles and practical application in a charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing environment, in addition with knowledge of Safety/Environmental/Health issues. 

    UNIT STANDARD DEVELOPMENTAL OUTCOME 
    Operate as an efficient unit in carrying out the productions plan/programme in the packing shed.

    Collect, clean, store and deliver tools and instruments utilized in the starch shed in effective and efficient manner.

    Listen, understand instructions and verbally report in an effective manner to line manager.
