PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can operate a bar machine to form outer boxes, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Start the bar machine.
  • Process the skillets into outer boxes.
  • Shut down the bar machine. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at an NQF 1.
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the match manufacturing production process in their workplace.
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 1 requirements. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of the Unit Standard covers:
  • The whole environment that can be described as match manufacturing.
  • All the personnel involved in all activities of match manufacturing.
  • All the material that is handled and processed in this work area of match manufacturing.
  • All the company's work procedures and safety regulations relating to this work area of match manufacturing.
  • All the relevant OSHACT stipulations, which have bearing on, match manufacturing and all other activities in this work area.

    The context of the Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF level 2 in the activity of match manufacturing.

    The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 2, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in match manufacturing is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 2 to 4. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Start the bar machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The forming bar is placed on the machine as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The machine is switched on as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The outer box conveyor is switched on as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The side pot is checked for cleanliness. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The glue dispenser is checked and filled, if necessary, with glue chips of the correct type as per quality requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The glue level in the side pot is checked and topped up if low. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The relevant (Compo Dipper) operator is called to check the glue temperature (165 - 175 degrees Celsius) as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    Two stillages of the correct brand of skillets are collected for use on the bar machine as per production plan. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Process the skillets into outer boxes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    The VPO tracks are kept full of outer boxes at all times. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Quality checks are conducted on the outer-formed boxes and recorded on process control sheet as per the work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Glue level in side pot is checked to be just above glue applicator shaft. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The forming bar, discs and the pressure wheel are cleaned as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    When problems occur, a fitter is called by switching on the relevant light as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The supervisor is informed of the encountered problems. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Shut down the bar machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The magazine is run empty before the bar is stopped as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The Bar machine is switched off as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The forming bar is removed from the machine and cleaned as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The pressure wheel, the folding discs and the outside of the glue pot are cleaned as per work instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures.

  • Match manufacturing principles and practical application in the match manufacturing environment, in addition with knowledge of safety / environmental / health issues.
