PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who feed the veneer to the V.S.M. (Veneer Stacking Machine), whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Check the machine after the CAB Operator has started it.
  • Prepare for lay-up.
  • Check quality of veneer.
  • Feed veneer into the V.S.M.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at an ABET level 3.
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the match manufacturing production process in their workplace.
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 1 requirements.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of the Unit Standard covers:
  • The whole environment that can be described as match manufacturing.
  • All the personnel involved in all activities of match manufacturing.
  • All the material that is handled and processed in this work area of match manufacturing.
  • All the company's work procedures and safety regulations relating to this work area of match manufacturing.
  • All the relevant OSHACT stipulations, which have bearing on, match manufacturing and all other activities in this work area.

    The context of the Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF level 1 in the activity of match manufacturing.

    The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 1, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in match manufacturing is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 1 to 4.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Check the machine after the CAB Operator has started it. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The guillotine is checked visually to see whether it moves up and down. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The guillotine rollers are checked visually to see if they are rotating. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The hogger conveyor is visually checked to see if it is working. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The hogger conveyor cover is replaced if the hogger is not working and the waste bin is requested from the Forklift Driver. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The area around the hogger conveyor cover is cleaned according to the safe work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare for lay-up. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Billet trims that are produced after the first peeling of each billet are removed as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The tapered lead is removed and disposed of in the hogger belt or waste bin as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The short veneer pieces are removed and stacked aside as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The tapered tails are removed and disposed of in the hogger belt or waste bin as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Check quality of veneer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The veneer surface and edges are visually checked for roughness and scratch marks. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The veneer is checked if it is trimmed on both edges. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Checking is done continuously as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Defects are identified, removed and communicated to the peeling machine operator as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Feed veneer into the V.S.M. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The veneer is guided into the V.S.M. as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The veneer that is jammed in the guillotine area is removed safely and re-guided into machine according to safe work instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures.
