PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can apply ignition paint onto skillets, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Set up to paint skillets
  • Fill and assemble ignition paint
  • Inspect printed skillets
  • Feed the skillets into the magazine and paint skillets
  • Inspect painted skillet
  • Pack completed skillets into a carton
  • Remove the ignition paint trough and components clean, and shut down machine 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in communication and numerical skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at an ABET level 4;
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the match manufacturing production process in their workplace;
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 1 requirements. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of the Unit Standard covers:
  • The whole environment that can be described as match manufacturing.
  • All the personnel involved in all activities of match manufacturing.
  • All the material that is handled and processed in this work area of match manufacturing.
  • All the company's work procedures and safety regulations relating to this work area of match manufacturing.
  • All the relevant OSHACT stipulations, which have bearing on, match manufacturing and all other activities in this work area.

    The context of the Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF level 1 in the activity of match manufacturing.

    The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 1, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in match manufacturing is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 1 to 4. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Set up to paint skillets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Start the drying tunnel as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Ignition paint is collected from the ignition paint room as per production plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Ignition paint is mixed as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Ignition paint is tested for viscosity as per work instructions 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Fill and assemble ignition paint. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The ignition paint troughs are assembled as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Assembled ignition paint trough is fitted to the machine as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Ignition paint is added into the ignition paint trough as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Inspect printed skillets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Quality checks are conducted on printed skillets as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Skillets that are found to be defective are stacked aside for the Supervisor's inspection. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Feed the skillets into the magazine and paint skillets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The skillets are packed into the magazine without being dropped and ensuring that the magazine is not overfilled as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The skillets are fed with the printed side facing down and the bar code on the right hand side of the operator. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The ignition paint trough is lifted until its lever locks it in place as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The machine is started if the tunnel temperature is between 60 and 120 ºC. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The counter is zeroed as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The pressure roller is engaged as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    One skillet at a time is pulled out of the magazine without being turned and fed into the slide. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    The skillet is painted evenly between the two centre creasing and on the left-hand side of the last creasing as per quality specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9 
    The tunnel temperature is checked and recorded after every hour. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Inspect painted skillet. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Quality checks are conducted on painted skillets as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The painted skillet is checked immediately after it has come out of the tunnel to determine if it is dried completely. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Machine is reset if quality specifications do not conform to specifications as per work instruction. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Pack completed skillets into a carton. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Dried skillets are stacked into the carton ensuring that the ignition strips are aligned as per work instruction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Skillet stacks are packed into the carton until the carton is full and the carton is closed, sealed and a skillet sample of the same brand is stuck to a carton. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 7 
    Remove the ignition paint trough and components clean, and shut down machine.

    Machine components are cleaned as per work instructions.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his/ her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures
