PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who collate the punched matches out of the chain to fill and push the boxes to the inspection table, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Receive inners and outers.
  • Monitor continuous flow of inners and outers.
  • Monitor quality of inners and outers. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at an ABET level 3.
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the match manufacturing production process in their workplace.
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 1 requirements. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of the Unit Standard covers:
  • The whole environment that can be described as match manufacturing.
  • All the personnel involved in all activities of match manufacturing.
  • All the material that is handled and processed in this work area of match manufacturing.
  • All the company's work procedures and safety regulations relating to this work area of match manufacturing.
  • All the relevant OSHACT stipulations, which have bearing on, match manufacturing and all other activities in this work area.

    The context of the Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF level 1 in the activity of match manufacturing.

    The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 1, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in match manufacturing is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 1 to 4. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Receive inners and outers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The inner and outer box tracks are checked to ensure that they remain full at all times. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The splint level in the F.O.D magazine is monitored, the machine stopped if required and the Team Leader is informed of the situation as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Missing inner and outer boxes are replaced to maintain full tracks at all times. (Range: right way up, correctly orientated printed side up on outer boxes and inner open side up). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Punch bars are checked to ensure that they are operating properly as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Monitor continuous flow of inners and outers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Inner and outer boxes are being stopped from being fed into the box band when there is a space or punch-out in the match chain. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Inner boxes are checked to ensure that they are supplied with the open side up. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The box turners are checked to ensure that they maintain an even supply of boxes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The Ruffler operator is informed of jammed boxes by sounding the warning bell. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The machine is monitored to ensure that it is not stopped in the beam down position. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Machine stoppages are recorded on the stop-time record sheet. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Monitor quality of inners and outers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Checks are carried out to ensure that the correct product is going through the system as per verbal instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Damaged boxes are removed from the box tracks with the wire hook as per quality specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Bulging boxes, open joints, overlapping joints.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Visual checks are done on waxed matches and head sizes and the splint pattern on a match chain as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Defects are reported to the Team Leader and corrective action is taken as per working instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures.

    Match manufacturing principles and practical application in the match manufacturing environment, in addition with knowledge of Safety/Environmental/Health issues.
