PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who cut pine and poplar logs into billets, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Start the sawing machine
  • Feed one log at a time into the saw
  • Cut the logs into billets
  • Shut down the sawing machine
  • Clean Work Area 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at an ABET level 4;
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the match manufacturing production process in their workplace;
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 1 requirements. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of the Unit Standard covers:
  • The whole environment that can be described as match manufacturing.
  • All the personnel involved in all activities of match manufacturing.
  • All the material that is handled and processed in this work area of match manufacturing.
  • All the company's work procedures and safety regulations relating to this work area of match manufacturing.
  • All the relevant OSHACT stipulations, which have bearing on, match manufacturing and all other activities in this work area.

    The context of the Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF level 1 in the activity of match manufacturing.

    The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 1, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in match manufacturing is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 1 to 4. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Start the sawing machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The main switch and control lock out switch is turned on. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The emergency switch is disengaged as per work instructions 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The various machine components are started and checked to ensure that all the components are working as per work instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Billet out-feed conveyor, sawdust fan, saw out-feed conveyor, conveyors, saw feed conveyor, saw clamps, top billet clamps, billet pusher, in-feed conveyors
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The debarker conveyor indicator lights are lit to check if they are in working order. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The beam is activated and the saw is checked whether it moves forward and backward. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Beam speed is checked for both small and large diameter logs as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Feed one log at a time into the saw. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The debarker operator is given a signal to supply logs when they are needed as per production requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The log is fed from the tipping conveyor to the saw in-feed conveyor. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The logs that did not land correctly on the saw in-feed conveyor are aligned with the conveyor as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The log is clamped using the side clamps. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The logs whose length is less than 50cm is clamped with the top clamp. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Cut the logs into billets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The log is cut into billets as per company specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Logs that are less than 25cm in diameter are cut while the saw beam is set for small billets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Logs that are more than 25cm in diameter are cut while the saw beam is set for big billets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Cut billets are pushed to the saw take-off conveyor for further processing 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Off cuts are pushed onto the waste conveyor as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Shut down the sawing machine.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All the conveyors are stopped as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The saw is stopped as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The saw beam is fully retracted as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The two side clamps and the top clamp are fully retracted as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The machine is switched off as per working instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The number of billets cut are recorded on the process control sheet and reset to zero as per work instructions.

    Clean Work Area.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Barks and billet off cuts are removed from the cutting area and disposed of in the waste conveyor as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Barks and billet off cuts around and under the cutting area are removed and disposed of in the waste conveyor as per work instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures
