PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can follow procedures to assist with setting up and operating log yard of a wood preservation plant, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Assist with offloading logs onto the log receiving deck/offloading deck
  • Assist with sorting logs and storing equipment
  • Aid with the setting up and operating the debarking facility
  • Assist with conditioning process of sorted debarked logs
  • Aid with the feeding of sorted debarked logs to the Peeler receiving deck
  • Assist in keeping records of logs received at and processed at the Peeler (log tallying) 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at NQF Level 1;
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the wood preservation environment's process and procedures of the relevant workplace;
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 1 requirements.
  • Environmental management principles equivalent to NQF Level 1. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The whole environment, which can be described as the log yard, conditioning and peeling area of a Wood Preservation Plant.
  • All personnel involved in all the activities of this work area, i.e. the log yard, conditioning and peeling.
  • All material that is handled and processed in the relevant work areas of the log yard, conditioning and peeling. (Raw, processed, reject, waste)
  • All the relevant work procedures and safety, health and environmental management procedures relating to the log yard, conditioning and peeling.

    The context of this Unit Standard relates to training a Learner at NQF Level 2 in the setting up and operating activities relevant to the log yard, conditioning and peeling of a Wood Preservation Plant.

    The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 2, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a Wood Preservation environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 2 to 4.

    Assist with offloading logs onto the log receiving deck/offloading deck

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The logs are unloaded correctly onto the log receiving deck according to the prescribed procedures in the work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The Learner demonstrates the correct use of prescribed log unloading procedures and equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The demonstration proves that the Learner knows and understands the correct procedures for unloading logs. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Assist with sorting logs and storing equipment

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The logs are correctly sorted and stored according to prescribed procedures and techniques. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The Learner demonstrates the correct use of prescribed sorting and storage procedures and equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The demonstration proves that the Learner knows and understands the correct procedures for sorting logs and storing them. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Aid with the setting up and operating of the debarking facility

    Logs are correctly debarked using the debarking facilities as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The Learner is able to demonstrate the correct procedures for setting up and operating the debarking facilities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The demonstration is correct and proves that the Learner knows and understands the procedures for setting up and operating the debarking facilities. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Assist with conditioning process of sorted debarked logs 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Logs are correctly conditioned using the conditioning facilities as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The Learner demonstrates the correct use of prescribed techniques and procedures for conditioning sorted, debarked logs as detailed in the work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The demonstration proves that the Learner knows and understands the correct techniques and procedures for the conditioning of debarked logs as per the work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Aid with the feeding of sorted debarked logs to the Peeler receiving deck 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Logs are fed to the Peeler receiving deck according to work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The Learner demonstrates the correct use of prescribed techniques and procedures for feeding sorted, debarked logs to the Peeler receiving deck as detailed in the work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The demonstration proves that the Learner knows and understands the correct techniques and procedures for feeding of sorted, debarked logs to the Peeler receiving deck. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Assist in keeping records of logs received at and processed at the Peeler (log tallying) 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Logs are correctly recorded as they are received at the Peeler as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The demonstration proves that the Learner knows and understands the prescribed methods of recording logs received at the Peeler. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the
    relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures
