PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can follow procedures in grade Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board in Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board Plant

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Prepare the relevant grading facilities (Range: Grading table grading chain, mechanical graders, moisture meters, measuring equipment, marking materials and equipment)
  • Access, prepare and present the ungraded Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board for the grading process (Range: Dried Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board store, movement to grading area, receiving area at grading facility)
  • Grade Veneer/ Plywood/Block Board (Range: relevant grading rules, grader marks, marking equipment and materials)
  • Oversee the preparation of the graded Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board for despatch (i.e. collection, sorting, parcelling, stamping the grade marks and strapping of parcels) (Range: relevant grade and dimension classes, grade marks, parcel sizes, grade marking equipment and materials, positioning of marks, marking procedures, strapping equipment, materials and methods) 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at NQF Level 1;
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the veneer and plywood manufacturing process and procedures of the relevant workplace;
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 1 requirements. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The environment that covers the grading facility, with all its equipment, tools and instruments.
  • The people involved in the grading facility.
  • The spread of raw material and products produced by the operation.
  • The general work procedures, safety and health measures and environmental management principles relevant to the grading facility.

    The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF Level 2 in the veneer and plywood manufacturing activity.

    The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 2, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a veneer and plywood manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 2 to 4.

    Prepare the relevant grading facilities.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The preparation of the relevant grading facility is carried out according to correct procedures to facilitate an effective and efficient process as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The relevant grading facility is maintained in a safe working and operational condition as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The preparation is performed within the prescribed time limits as per work instructions.

    Access, prepare and present the ungraded Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board for the grading process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The process of accessing, preparing and presenting the ungraded Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board for the grading task is carried out according to work instructions and facilitates the uninterrupted flow of production in this process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct ungraded Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board is presented for the grading process as per specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The task is performed at the correct time and within the prescribed time limits as per work instructions.

    Oversee the preparation of the graded Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board for despatch (i.e. collection, sorting, parcelling, stamping the grade marks and strapping of parcels).

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The task of overseeing the preparation of the graded Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board for despatch is carried out according to work instructions and facilitates the prescribed orderliness in the process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The graded Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board is correctly bundled, marked and strapped for despatch. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The task is performed within the prescribed time limits as per work instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the
    relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures

  • Communication and mathematical skills equivalent to NQF Level 2 requirements;
