PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can sort and stack graded Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board in Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board Plant

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Identify grader's marks on graded Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board (Range: marks and colour codes for the relevant appearance as well as machine grades of Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board, grading stations and their products)
  • Collect graded Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board and stack in parcels containing similar grades and uniform dimensions (Range: Graders' marks and colour codes, dimensions- width and length classes' stack/parcel sizes, collection points and stacking stations)
  • Strap parcels/ stacks of graded and marked Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board for despatch to next stage in the Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board plant (Range: Parcel/stack sizes, strapping equipment and materials) 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at NQF Level 1;
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the veneer and plywood manufacturing process and procedures of the relevant workplace;
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 1 requirements. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The environment which covers the Sorting and Stacking Facilities, with all its equipment, tools and instruments.
  • The people involved in the Sorting and Stacking Facilities.
  • The spread of raw material and products produced by the operation.
  • The general work procedures, safety and health measures and environmental management principles relevant to the Sorting and Stacking Facilities.

    The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF Level 1 in the veneer and plywood manufacturing activity.

    The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 1, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a veneer and plywood manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 1 to 3.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The learner performs the task of identifying graders' marks as prescribed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The graded Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board is classified into the correct grade classes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The identification process is performed within the prescribed time limits 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Collect graded Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board and stack in parcels containing similar grades and uniform dimensions. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Graders' marks and colour codes, dimensions- width and length classes' stack/parcel sizes, collection points and stacking stations 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The correct collection and stacking in parcels of graded Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board is carried out as per work instructions and facilitates that these parcels contain the appropriate grade of Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board of uniform dimensions as per specifications 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The process is performed in the prescribed manner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The stacks contain graded Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board of the appropriate grades and dimensions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The task is performed within the prescribed time limits as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Strap parcels/ stacks of graded and marked Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board for despatch to next stage in the Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board plant. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Parcel/ stack sizes, strapping equipment and materials 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The strapping process is performed using the prescribed methods, equipment and materials as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The stacks ready for despatch are strapped as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The strapping process is performed within the prescribed time limits as per work instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the
    relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures 

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    A demonstrated understanding of:
  • Communication and mathematical skills equivalent to NQF Level 1 requirements;
  • The equipment, processes and procedures pertaining to the Sorting and Stacking Facilities;
  • His/her responsibilities regarding work procedures, safety and health measures, and environment protection aspects relevant to the Sorting and Stacking Facilities;
  • Knowledge of the specifics of the lay out and purpose of the Sorting and Stacking Facilities;
  • Knowledge of the general functions of the major production equipment in the Sorting and Stacking Facilities;
  • Knowledge of the sequence of the production stages in the Sorting and Stacking Facilities.
