PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to identify and determine appropriate repairs and touch ups to completed items.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Determining repair requirements.
  • Carrying out repairs and touch ups. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in numeracy and literacy equivalent to NQF level 2. They will also have achieved, or be able to demonstrate equivalent competence to, the National Certificate in Furniture Finishing (Wood), NQF level 2. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following elements include, but are not limited to:
  • Repair requirement : major; minor; single; multiple; re-staining; tinting-colouring; smoothing; re-apply base and finishing coat
  • Organisational requirements : repair costs; wastage; re-cycling; re-use of materials
  • Materials : All finishing materials; touch up pencils; fillers; pigments etc.
  • Equipment : tools; abrasives; brushes required
  • Damage information for quality control : type; frequency; production causes; errors; handling causes; extent
  • Furniture preparation : disassemble; reassemble.

    Furniture item is thoroughly examined to identify type, extent and potential cause of damage 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Type and extent of damage is accurately established and noted 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Information regarding damage is recorded for purposes of quality control and preventative damage action 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Potential cause of damage is reported to appropriate authority for action.

    Determine repair requirement.

    Repair or touch up operation options are identified and evaluated according to organisational requirements

    Materials and equipment needed to carry out repair are identified and confirmed to be available

    Repair requirement is confirmed with relevant person as being the optimum cost effective solution

    Materials, equipment and tools are used correctly and safely according to their identified use 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Repairs and touch up are carried out safely and within the time allocated
