PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to prepare for and machine materials to form profiled timber and composite board components in a safe and productive manner.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Selecting and preparing materials for machining of profiled timber and board components and products.
  • Preparing and setting machines to produce profiled timber and board product components and products.
  • Machining materials to form profiled timber and composite board components or products. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in numeracy and literacy equivalent to NQF level 2. They will also have achieved, or be able to demonstrate equivalent competence to, the National Certificate in Furniture Wood Machining and Cabinet Making, NQF level 2.

    Production information is checked for accuracy and sufficiency and any incorrect information is reported to the relevant person. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All necessary materials and equipment for the job are identified and accessed, and any non-availability is reported to the relevant person. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The quality and quantity of materials is checked and remedial action taken if there is non-conformity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The compatibility of materials with the machine to be used is accurately established and correct remedial action taken if there is non-conformity. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare and set machines to produce profiled timber and board product components and products.

    Jigs, templates and other necessary dimension control aids are correct and fit for the purpose.

    Correct tooling for the job is fitted and secured correctly.

    Correct routine procedures for the profiling machine are carried out in accordance with all safety regulations.

    The operations are completed within the allowed time.

    Own work practices minimise the risk of injury and damage to machinery and equipment and the health and safety of self and others.

    All health and safety requirements are adhered to prior to switching on the profiling machine.

    Where necessary assistants are in place prior to and during operations.

    Profiling machinery is started and stopped correctly and safely. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Materials are fed at optimum feed speeds suited to materials and machines.

    The use of guards and relevant safety procedures and requirements are maintained throughout the operations.

    The finished profiled products conform to required specifications.
