PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons who are required to assess nutritional requirements, identify problems and possible solutions relevant to both a community and the individual.

People credited with this u s are able to:
  • Identify nutritional needs and resources
  • Identify value of different foods and food groups
  • Establish, develop and maintain local nutritional resources.

    The credit calculation for this unit standard is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following outcomes or areas of learning when starting to learn towards this unit standard:

    Nutritional needs for daily living are identified in terms of specific requirements.

    The nutritional value of available traditional/indigenous food sources is identified in terms of the quantity required, cost, saving and socio-cultural value.

    Food is selected to meet the needs of the community and the individual in terms of specific dietary requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Specific dietary requirements include traditional diets, religious diets, vegan diets, and vegetarian diets.

    A nutritional programme is identified in terms of optimising well-being for special conditions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Nutritional resources are sourced or produced in accordance with the relevant identified needs and preferences of the community. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Methods of producing nutritional resources include planting seeds and harvesting on an ongoing basis, involving the community.
  • Sourcing includes suppliers working in the field of food security in the specific community including government and non-government agencies.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Food resources are preserved and stored without destroying nutritional value. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Prevention of destroying nutritional value includes contamination and vermin infestation
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The principles of food hygiene are promoted so as to create awareness of its importance to family and community health. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The health risks associated with the inappropriate storage of food are explained in terms of disease and loss of nutritional value.

    The nutritional gains associated with the use of pesticides or organic methods are explained in terms of health risks and benefits. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited with ETQA.
    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and agreed ETQA procedures.
