PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners who have not studied geography and who are required to apply geographical knowledge and skill in authentic situations. It will be useful for learners in Local Government who are responsible for implementing change, District Municipalities, Extension Officers, Health Workers in rural clinics, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and learners who are required to understand Environmental Impact Reports (EIAs).

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Describing how humans impact on the physical environment.
  • Explaining how humans have impacted on the physical environment of selected places.
  • Analysing the changes in selected rural areas.

    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Human activities in a rural environment are explained in terms of the potential impact on the physical environment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Positive and negative impact.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Activities that impact positively and negatively on the physical environment are described with reference to changing attitudes and values. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Attitudes and values include conventional and indigenous knowledge systems.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The impact of population growth on the physical environment is explained with reference to how people use land. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain how humans have impacted on the physical environment in selected places.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The practice of overgrazing is explained with reference to the effect on the physical environment, the water table and the long-term economic implications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The practice of deforestation is explained with reference to the effect of the water table, unsustainable harvesting and the long-term economic implications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The problems associated with pollution in a local area are explained with reference to changes in lifestyle and waste management. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Problems related to the introduction of alien vegetation are explained with reference to the effect on the nutrient value of the soil, the water supply and local ecosystems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The positive and negative impact of veld fires on the local environment is explained with reference to how they change economic practice and the local environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The positive and negative impact of dam construction on the local environment is explained with reference to local ecosystems, biodiversity, habitat destruction. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Analyse the changes in selected rural areas. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The positive changes in a rural environment as a result of human habitation are analysed with reference to improved infrastructure and initiatives by local inhabitants. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Changes include, but are not limited to, primary healthcare facilities, schools, basic services, potable water, electricity and roads.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The negative changes in a rural environment as a result of human habitation are analysed with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Changes include, but are not limited to, poverty, migration, breakdown of family systems, pollution, erosion, social and cultural breakdown and disease.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Changes in lifestyle as a result of change in selected rural areas are described with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Changes includes, but are not limited to, networking methods, social changes, changing attitudes and values, employment and the use of the environment.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Implications of changes in transport networks and infrastructure are analysed with reference to the potential for economic activities, health and general wellness, education and the impact on the rural environment.
