PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate understanding of production or packaging surfaces.
  • Handle and use measuring and maintenance tools.
  • Handle and use lubricants.
  • Apply basic hand skills to perform first line maintenance on production or packaging equipment.

    This unit standard is intended for a person operating production or packaging equipment and needs to perform first line maintenance.

    This unit will contribute to the full development of the learner with in the manufacturing and packaging environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of manufacturing and assembly.The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth within the manufacturing and processing environment.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope and context of this unit standard is for anyone who has works in a manufacturing or packaging environment who needs to perform first line maintenance on a production or packaging equipment.

    The level assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because the process requires a range of well-developed skills and offers a significant choice of procedures. Some relevant theoretical knowledge, interpretation of available information, discretion and judgement, as well as a range of known responses to familiar problems are employed. The application of this unit standard is to qualify the person for certification in skilled occupations and sub-trades. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate understanding of production or packaging surfaces. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Surfaces refer to metal and non-metal surfaces generally accepted as safe to manufacture FMCG.

    1. Different surfaces used within production and/or packaging environment are identified according to approved consumer safe surfaces.

    Identify 5 different surfaces within the production or packaging environment.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The main characteristics of the surfaces are described according to accepted surfaces characterises criteria. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The application and use of surfaces within manufacturing or packaging environment are described according to accepted surface functionalities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. General safety factors that need to be considered when performing first line maintenance are described according to accepted safety criteria.

    Handle and use measuring and maintenance tools.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Basic measuring and maintenance tools used during first line maintenance are identified according to fit for purpose and safety criteria. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Identify at least 3 different maintenance and 3 measuring tools.Maintenance refer to screw drivers, pliers and spanners. Measuring tools refer to feeler gauges, tape measure, micrometers and verniers.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Measuring and application tools are used according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Basic errors during the handling and usage of measuring and maintenance tools are identified according to standard operating procedures.

    4. Basic caring, maintenance, cleaning and storage of measuring and maintenance tools used during first line maintenance are demonstrated according to standard operating procedures.

    5. Personal and tool safety are demonstrated during the handling and usage of these tools according to standard operating procedures.

    Lubricants refer to solid, semi-solid and gas.Identify at least 2 different solid, semi-solid and gas lubricants.

    2. Lubricants within first line maintenance are used according to standard operating procedures and fit for purpose principles.

    3. Basic errors during the handling and usage of lubricants are identified according to standard operating procedures.
