PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners who apply knowledge of historical events to explain trends, phases and cycles in data in a work environment. It will be useful for learners in Local, Regional and National government, museums, claims assessors, financial services, fraud investigators, politicians, travel and tourism, Non-government Organisations (NGOs), crime investigators, and for personal development of the informed public.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Investigating aspects of microhistory to make generalisations at micro level.
  • Applying the skills of historical enquiry to interpret macro historical developments at macro level.
  • Applying historical knowledge to explain phases and trends. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at Level 3.

    A series of historical events at micro level is analysed to identify and explain a local trend. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The relative importance of a selected event is determined based on the assessment of available evidence. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Evidence is investigated from different points of view in order to explain the past. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Qualitative and quantitative data are integrated to explain a trend or generalisation.
