PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard introduces learners to period in history. It will be useful for learners in business as well as learners who work with antiques and art collections, learners in museums, heritage practice, travel and tourism, environmental assessors, social and historical impact assessors, archaeological fieldworkers and business managers.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the importance of period as a tool for understanding the past.
  • Analysing the main features of a selected period.
  • Comparing a selected period to another period.
  • Describing the relationship between a selected period and the present.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication at Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this unit standard is selected periods in history relevant to a specific field. It includes, but is not limited to, colonial, pre-colonial and post-colonial; industrial, and pre-industrial; Iron Age and Stone Age; baroque and romantic and other commonly recognised historical periods.

    Explain the importance of period as a tool for understanding the past.
