PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
People who are pursuing a career in basic boat building require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. Learners who achieve this unit standard will demonstrate a fundamental knowledge base of small craft manufacturing and contribute to the boat building sector in demonstrating an understanding of small craft designs, terminology and international boating environment.
A person credited with this unit standard is able to: |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
It is assumed that the learner has the following knowledge and skills:
|
UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
Small Craft includes wood, polycomposite or metal boats under 30 meters in length and constructed primarily for leisure purposes.
The range covers the role and purpose of the construction of small craft sector. It includes the practices, culture, quality standards, legal framework, main activities and expectations of clients in the construction of small craft sector. |
Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Describe and discuss the geometric process of small craft design. |
OUTCOME RANGE |
Geometric process covers lines (vertical, horizontal, agle, curves and circles) and geometrical shapes (triangle, polygons and quadrilaterals). |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The geometric process is described relative to its uses in small craft design. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The differences between the various geometric relationships of a lines plan are discussed to reflect the different characteristics of the end view, side view and plan view. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The design plan is interpreted to determine the ultimate size of the craft relative to the lines plan scale. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
The lines plan is interpreted to transfer the design from scale to final product. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Identify the types of boats and explain its uses. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The different small craft is visually identified by explaining its characteristics. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Different small craft include but is not limited to, Kayaks, dinghies, power and sail, ribs, sport fisherman, keel boats, sailing cats, power cats, work boats. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The different small craft is visually identified by explaining its characteristics and uses for leisure/or commercial activity. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The different small craft is identified by explaining its area of operations and limitations for leisure/or commercial activity. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
The different small craft is identified by explaining the materials used for its construction and the impact on its uses. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 |
Describe the boating environment and its contribution to leisure and/or commercial activity. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Historical events that had a development impact on the boating are described to reflect both national and international environments. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The impact of leisure activities on the boating industry is explained to determine its contribution to the development of the industry. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Leisure activities include but is not limited to river rafting, sailing, sport fishing, canoeing, rowing. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The impact of commercial requirements on the boating industry is explained to determine its contribution to the development of the industry. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Commercial requirements include but is not limited to fishing, tourism, ferry, transport, charter, supply vessels. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
The impact of legislative requirements on the boating industry are described to demonstrate its influence on the design and safety aspects. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 |
Identify location on a boat and the functioning of individual parts and its relation to the operation of the vessel. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The parts of a boat is identified and explained in relation to the overall functioning of the small craft. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Parts of a boat include but is not limited to deck, hull, keel, rudder. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The combinations of masts, rigs and sails are identified and described in relation to its uses for propulsion purposes. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The combinations of engines and drive train systems are identified and described in relation to its uses for propulsion purposes. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
The legislative safety requirements and equipment critical to the operation of a small craft is identified and explained in terms of its area of operation. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Safety requirements and equipment include but is not limited to regulating bodies, legislative, inland, inshore, coastal, off-shore and ocean. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
The terminology and concepts in the boating environment are used to communicate effectively. |
