PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People who are pursuing a career in basic boat building require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. Learners who achieve this unit standard will demonstrate a fundamental knowledge base of small craft manufacturing and contribute to the boat building sector in identifying and using applicable finishing materials in building small craft.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Identify and select the applicable materials, equipment and methods for the preparation of a surface.
  • Identify, select and apply the applicable materials and methods for the appropriate finishing technique.
  • Seal and bond hardware, fixtures and fittings.

    It is assumed that learners are already competent in:

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Small Craft includes wood, polycomposite or metal boats under 30 meters in length and constructed primarily for leisure purposes.

    The range covers the role and purpose of the boat building sector. It includes the practices, culture, quality standards, legal framework, main activities and expectations of clients in the boat building sector. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify and use the applicable materials, equipment and methods for the preparation of a surface. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Materials, equipment and methods include but not limited to solvents, sand papers and power tools.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The types of materials, equipment and methods are described to reflect their applicability to the preparation of a surface.

    The method of preparation to be used is determined through examination of the type to be prepared.

    The material relevant to the specific method is identified for the preparation of a surface.

    The application method is identified and materials and equipment are prepared for use.

    Identify, and select the applicable materials for the appropriate finishing technique.

    The types of primers, paints and varnishes are identified and measured for the application process.

    The application of various paints, primers and varnishes are applied using the relevant techniques.

    The types of adhesive, sealants and bonding agents are identified and their unique characteristics and specific uses are explained in relation to the relevant application. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The types of preparation methods and materials are identified and explained for the relevant application. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The application of various adhesives, sealants and bonding agents are applied using the relevant techniques and equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Adhesive and sealer on and around fitting perimeters are prepared to facilitate easy finishing, trimming and cleaning. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the Qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual Unit Standards as well as the integrated competence described in the Qualification.

    Assessors should keep the following general principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes. Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Ensure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • Ensure evidence is gathered across the range as expressed under the title of unit standards. Specific range statements under individual outcomes or assessment criteria are illustrations, from which learning programme developers can select. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the learner is able to perform in the real situation.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate can achieve the outcomes again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance can be reproduced.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well-documented principles: assessment should be appropriate, fair, manageable, integrated into work or learning, valid, and consistent. Evidence should be authentic, sufficient, and current.
  • Assessment of this standard can be carried out through continuous assessment throughout the course of study and specific performances assessed.
