PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to plan and control the processing, compaction and shaping of stabilized and unstabilized pavement layers to comply to the project specification, in a cost effective and safe manner.This competence complements the other core supervisory competencies and underpins the elective learning.It contributes to the development of a professional community of Civil Engineering Construction Supervisors. The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved. Its contribution to socio-economic transformation is that learners would be able to undergo RPL-assessment and thereby receive recognition for previous learning and experience. The employability and career prospects of learners can therefore be enhanced by this qualification.

NQF 1 Literacy and numeracy

The following competencies: Calculate construction quantities to develop a work plan; Implement Road Side Safety Procedures; Use and Maintain Small Plant and Equipment on a Construction Site; Read and Interpret Construction Drawing and Specifications; Organize and Control the construction of bulk earthworks; Handle, transport, utilize hazardous materials. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
Cement, lime, bitumen, emulsion, foam bitumen, Sulphonated Petroleum and combinations of stabilized as well as unstabilized layers consisting of natural in-situ, borrow pit material or processed materials (crusher run) from commercial sources are included.
