PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to handle dangerous goods during warehousing and storage. They are able to classify goods in preparation for storage and prepare these goods for safe transportation. Learners are also able to handle incidents in the event of them happening in accordance with required safety procedures and guidelines.

A person credited with this unit standard is capable of:
  • Identifying and classifying dangerous goods in accordance with documentation, packaging and labelling.
  • Handling and storing classified goods and substances.
  • Preparing the dangerous goods for transportation.
  • Taking appropriate actions in the event of accidents in the handling of dangerous goods. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.

    This unit standard requires the individual to undertake the relevant outcomes actions for the identified classes of Dangerous Goods as listed below (as applicable to the specific industry):
  • Class 1 - explosives.
  • Class 2 - gases.
  • Class 3 - flammable liquids.
  • Class 4 - flammable solids.
  • Class 5 - oxidizers & organic peroxides.
  • Class 6 - toxic & infectious substances.
  • Class 7 - radioactive materials.
  • Class 8 - corrosives.
  • Class 9 - miscellaneous dangerous goods/substances.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify and classify dangerous goods in accordance with documentation, packaging and labelling. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The type of dangerous goods is identified and determined in relation to labelling and documentation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The dangerous goods are classified in accordance to South African National Standards codes (10228) of practice and international codes. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Handle and store classified goods and substances. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Options and possibilities for the segregation/demarcation in the safe handling and storage of dangerous goods are identified and described in accordance with laid down safety standards, pollution and environmental requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Safe working procedures and practices in the handling and storage of dangerous goods are identified, explained, described and applied according to national codes of practice and legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Potential hazards in the working environment are identified, explained and described according to codes of practices and national legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The choice of a particular method of handling and storage (in relation to the classification of dangerous goods), the precautions to take and the aspects of applicable legislation and codes of practice are explained, described and applied. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The handling/storage operation, and the ways in which the process could be compromised are described and explained as it relates to codes of practice and national legislation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Prepare the dangerous goods for transportation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The compatibility of the dangerous goods are explained and described according to South African National Standards code of practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The relevant documentation for the transportation of dangerous goods is identified, explained, described and completed according to national legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The applicable Dangerous Goods Placards are identified and explained as required by South African National Standards codes of practice and national legislation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Take appropriate actions in the event of accidents in the handling of dangerous goods.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The accident/incident reporting is defined as required by national legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The accident/incident appropriate actions are explained and demonstrated according to national legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safety procedures are explained and described according to South African Bureau Of Standards 0232 part 3, annexure A. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion. 

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
  • Knowledge of the categorisation of dangerous goods as it pertains to the selection and utilization of handling equipment and securing techniques.
  • An understanding of the relevant legislation (OHS Act, national road traffic act) and codes of practice (South African National Standards 10228, South African Bureau of Standards 0229, 0231, 0232 (part 1 and 3), 0233, 0263, pertaining to the dangerous goods classification, handling methods, packaging, labeling requirements, emergency and warehousing.
  • Knowledge of protection of the environment and a basic understanding of urban waste disposal systems in relation to spillage control.
  • Knowledge of the range of personal protective equipment worn during handling and storage of dangerous goods.
  • An understanding of basic emergency care procedures, emergency support systems and services available.
  • Knowledge of the classes and properties of dangerous goods (e.g. toxic, corrosive, flammable/explosive) and their potential hazards.
  • Knowledge of applicable local authority by-laws in relation to fire prevention.
