PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications.

The learner is capable of identifying the various types of exhaust emission gas analysers, conducting emission gas tests, analysing and interpreting the results and adjusting the vehicle fuel system to comply with manufacturer specifications. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that learners are already competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

All work is performed with little or no supervision in accordance with operational procedures, repair manual specifications and procedures in accordance with SHE legislation.

Read and interpret the job instructions. 
OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Interpret job instructions include obtaining technical data, the identification and selection of tools and equipment and to identify the type of exhaust gas analyser to be used.
  • Technical data include the parts and repair manuals.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Technical data is sourced in accordance with operational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Appropriate tools and equipment are obtained in accordance with the job instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of not using the correct technical data, tools and equipment are explained in terms of the impact on the job. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The work area is prepared in accordance with the job instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Select and connect the required test equipment.

    The equipment selected is appropriate to the vehicle being tested and the test being conducted.

    The vehicle is prepared and positioned in accordance with work instructions.

    Test equipment is connected in accordance with repair manual procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Reasons why specific test equipment is used are given in terms of the required result and availability of equipment.

    Test, diagnose and adjust exhaust emission gas.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The exhaust emission gas is tested in accordance with manufacturer specifications and operational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Test data is recorded in accordance with operational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The test results are diagnosed and explained in terms of the causes and potential solutions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The emission gas mixture is adjusted in accordance with the manufacturer specifications and safety procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Work is conducted in accordance with flat rate time schedules. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Consequences of not repairing identified faults are explained in terms of the impact on the engine performance and the environment.

    Apply safety concepts during diagnosing and repairing of fuel injection systems.

    The system is diagnosed and repaired without incident, accident or injury.

    No damage is caused to the fuel injection system, equipment and tools. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    All repair manual safety warnings and required actions before, during and after the task are adhered to. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Restore work area and complete and process documentation.

    Consequences of not leaving the workplace in the appropriate state are explained in terms of safety hazards and production.

    Documentation is completed and processed in accordance with workplace procedures.

    The reasons for the various documentation are explained in terms of their main functions.
