PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of identifying the various types of manual transmissions, to assess the condition of the parts and to repair and assemble the transmission and to record and submit a report. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that the learner has already learned how to use engineering hand tools, workshop equipment, power tools, and measuring equipment, measure and assess component parts for serviceability and to maintain a safe and productive working environment and also to dismantle vehicle drive train components.

All work is performed with little or no supervision in accordance with operational and repair manual specifications and procedures and in compliance with occupational safety, health and environmental legislation. 

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
Read and interpret the job instructions. 
OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Interpreting the job instructions include the type of transmission, the dismantled condition, that the dismantled parts must be cleaned and that the specifications must be obtained.
  • Types of transmissions include in-line and transverse.

    Technical data is sourced in accordance with operational procedures.

    The consequences of not using the correct technical data, tools and equipment are explained in terms of the impact on the job.

    The type of transmission is identified in terms of the vehicle make and model.

    The operation of transmission systems is explained in terms of the key differences between particular systems. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Assess the condition of the parts. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Assess the condition includes the layout of the parts in operational sequence and to conduct a visual and physical inspection.
  • Physical inspection include measuring components for defects and wear.
  • Measuring includes the use of micrometers, depth gauges, verniers, go/no-go gauges, dial gauges and feeler gauges.
