PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner achieving this unit standard will be able to operate water chemical dosing systems on a water and wastewater treatment plants. Learners will be provided with relevant competencies to be able to apply the required chemical dosages and monitor the use of relevant chemicals and to assist during emergency situations on the plant.

Learners will also be able to apply the relevant health, safety and legislative guidelines in the workplace. Learners completing this unit standard will be able to contribute to cost effective chemical dosing thus providing consumers with affordable water services.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Chemicals include but are not limited to ammonia, bromine, lime, calcium carbonate, ferric chloride, ferrous chloride, ferric sulphate, flocculants and chlorine products.

    Identify the chemicals used on a water and wastewater treatment plant.

    Types of chemicals are identified and explained in terms of their uses in the plant. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Safety procedures for chemical storage and handling are identified and applied through role-plays. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Chemicals for dosage are identified and prepared in accordance with workplace operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare chemical concentration and adjust chemical dosing rate.

    Chemical dosing equipment is identified in relation to their features and position in the plant.

    Different designs of dosing equipment are identified and explained in terms of their advantages and disadvantages.

    Dosing equipment is identified and drawn using flow diagrams. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Dosing equipment refers to but is not limited to dispensers, chemical dosing pumps, storage tanks and cylinders.

    Requirements for chemical dosage are identified and explained in accordance with work policies and procedures.

    Chemical solutions are prepared according to the standard work procedures.

    Dosing equipment is adjusted according to process requirements.

    The amount of chemicals used is recorded for stock taking purposes.

    Chemical dosage is monitored using flow meters.

    The reasons for maintaining chemical dosing facilities and equipment are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Safety precautions relating to chemical spillage are explained in accordance with Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Possible incidents and accidents relating to chemical spillages are reported in accordance with organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Possible leaks and blockages are detected using detector tools. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Shutdown procedures for each unit process are explained in accordance with work policies and procedures.

    Demonstrate knowledge of emergency procedures in emergency situations.

    Potential emergency situations on own works are identified and explained for emergency response.

    The importance of following emergency procedures is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Location of emergency switches and isolating valves is identified for emergency reaction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The impact of chemical spillage on the environment is explained in terms of legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Ways to contain spillage and leaks from bulk storage are explained in order prevent environment pollution.

    Ways refer but are not limited to bund wall and spillage container blanket (arzobit) products.

    Clean up procedures after the emergency situations are explained in order to reduce further risks. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA`s policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual unit standards as well as the integrated competence described in the qualification.
