PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard are required by people in the field of mechanical engineering.

Qualifying learners can carry out engineering turning operations with a range of accessories and tools. The results are checked with precision measuring instruments.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Plan and prepare for complex turning operation.
  • Machine matching internal and external tapers.
  • Use accessories for machine tapping and reaming.
  • Calculate and machine multi start thread. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression. It is one of a series of unit standards for turning in the engineering machining skills area.

    The credits allocated to this unit standard assume that a learner has already learned to:
  • Produce components by performing turning operations NQF Level 3. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Turning operations include but are not limited to matching internal and external tapers, machine tapping and reaming, matching multi start thread.
  • The scope and level of this unit standard is determined by the ranges as indicated under the specific outcomes.
  • The learner should be able to work autonomously.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tables are interpreted to determine the different types and class of fits. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tables and formulae are used and interpreted to calculate angles and threads and test tapers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tables and formulae are used and interpreted for reaming, tapping and screw cutting. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Assembly drawings are analysed to determine the impact on the planning and sequence of operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Assembly drawing is used to plan the materials, accessories and equipment required for the turning operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The impact of speeds and feeds are analysed to reflect the standard and quality of finish.

    Machine internal and external tapers (matching).

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The method for machining of taper is selected in accordance with the angles specified in drawing. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Method could include compound slide or taper turning attachments.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Angle is set to meet the opposite taper in accordance with drawing specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tapers are machined to match each other utilising a selected method in accordance with legal and safety requirements.

    The amount of material to be removed is calculated to enable the tapers to match. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Testing methods are utilised to ensure that tapers are matched in accordance with specified tolerances.

    Component is finished in accordance with quality and drawing specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Reporting requirements are met in accordance with workplace procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Use accessories for machine tapping and reaming. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Accessories include but are not limited to tolerance charts, speeds and feeds charts, tapping attachment, clamping equipment, tail stock.

    Drill and tap sizes are selected in accordance with the tolerance charts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Speeds and feeds are selected according to charts and calculations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Holes are drilled to meet tapping or reaming specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Accessories are utilised in accordance with the hole size. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Measuring equipment is utilised to test whether tapped or reamed hole meet specified tolerances.

    Problems are recognised and addressed in accordance with standard operating procedures.

    Tables or calculations are used to determine internal and external diameters. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Speeds and feeds are selected according to charts and calculations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Gear train settings are selected and set to machine multiple start threads according to the calculations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Cutting tools are prepared to machine multiple start threads according to the pitch and type of thread. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Multiple start threads are machined and matched according to the calculated diameters. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Measuring equipment is selected and utilised to test whether multiple start threads meet specified tolerances. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Measuring equipment includes but not limited to pitch gauge, micrometers and vernier and dial test indicators.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The assessment will be governed by the policies and guidelines of the relevant Education and Training Quality Assuror (ETQA) that has jurisdiction over this field of learning.

    The assessor will (at the very least) be accredited and have a relevant qualification and be a subject matter expert in this learning area and at least have 3 years experience in the skills specific area.

    The learner can be assessed against this unit standard to obtain credits or as part of an integrated assessment for a qualification:
