PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful for persons who will be involved in the maintenance and repair of electrical equipment in the mining industry and specifically to maintain the electrical system of winder operations.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Explain the factors critical to maintaining the electrical system of winder operations.
  • Prepare to maintain the electrical system of winder operations.
  • Maintain the electrical system of winder operations.
  • Test the electrical system of winder operations and prepare for operation.

    This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge and understanding of maintaining the electrical system of winder operations in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

    It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Use hand held test instruments at NQF Level 2.
  • Use hand tools at NQF Level 2.
  • Knowledge of the shaft signalling and communication system's operation at NQF Level 2.
  • Knowledge of the dangers related to electrocution at NQF Level 2.
  • The treatment for electrical shock at NQF Level 2.
  • Know the dangers associated with working in close proximity of electricity.
  • Know the treatment for electrical shock.

    Maintenance must include but is not limited to:
  • Inspection and testing of safety devices and systems.
  • External inspection of electrical components and rectification of defects.
  • Identifying and repairing those defects, for example, loose terminations, which will only be apparent by de-energising the equipment and opening up enclosures, or using, where necessary, tools or test equipment (or both).

    The application of the different types of cleaning material, equipment and solvents are explained with reference to occupational health, safety and impact on the environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The various cleaning methods are explained in accordance with company procedures and manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The code of signals is explained in terms of company procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare to maintain the electrical system of winder installations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Permission is obtained in accordance with company procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The required personal protective equipment is selected, examined and used in a manner that protects the individual from injury. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tools, material and test equipment required are selected, examined and transported in accordance with laid down procedures.

    Affected parties are notified of scheduled inspections in accordance with company procedures.

    Hazards and risks directly related to the inspection of the system are identified and addressed in accordance with hazard identification procedures.

    Interpersonal interaction is positive, consistent with company policy, promotes effective teamwork, and avoids dysfunctional conflict.
