PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Electrical Engineering, Generation, Distribution, Transmission, Construction, Mining and Renewable Energy Sectors. This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge and understanding required for the installation, connecting and testing of direct-on-line AC rotating machines and control gear in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

A person credited with this unit standard will be capable of:
  • Planning the installation process.
  • Installing direct-on-line AC rotating machines and control gear.
  • Connecting and commissioning direct-on-line AC rotating machines and control gear.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within all sectors of the electrical engineering field. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

  • Introduction to industry and operational area (work environment).
  • Use of relevant electrical testing and measuring equipment and hand tools/power tools.

    Single phase AC motors which may include, but are not limited to:
  • Capacitor start, capacitor-start capacitor-run, shaded pole, and universal motors.
  • Alternators.

    Single phase AC control gear may include, but are not limited to:
  • Rotary switch controller.
  • Reversing contactors.

    Installation and commissioning of single phase direct-on-line AC rotating machines and control gear may include, but are not limited to:
  • Connecting different types of single phase motors to a rotary switch controller.
  • Connecting different types of single phase motors to reversing contactors.

    Three phase AC motors which may include, but are not limited to:
  • Three phase squirrel cage motors.

    Three phase AC control gear may include, but are not limited to:
  • Three phase magnetic circuit breakers used for full voltage starting of AC motors.
  • Three phase contactors with auxiliaries, stop and start stations, limit and sensory switches used for full voltage starting of AC motors.
  • Three phase protection units.
  • Indicator lamps, volt meters, ammeters.

    Installation and commissioning of three phase direct-on-line AC rotating machines and control gear may include, but are not limited to:
  • Connecting a three-phase squirrel cage motor to a direct-on line control system with one or more stop and start station.
  • Connecting a three-phase squirrel cage motor to a direct-on line forward and reverse control system with one or more stop and start station.
