This unit standard reflects the skills, values and knowledge required by people in the field of Occupational, Health and Safety who are responsible for measuring illumination levels in a work place by means of a Luxmeter.

Qualifying learners can measure illumination levels in a work place by means of a Luxmeter.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:

    The recommended illumination levels in a working place are explained in terms of legislative and ergonomic requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effects of inadequate illumination are explained in terms of the consequences to occupational health, safety and productivity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The principle of operation, the range of the Luxmeter and the precautions regarding handling and storage are explained in terms of site-specific and manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The methods of measurement and the application of the instrument are explained in terms of site-specific requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare to measure illumination levels. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Permission to enter the working place is obtained in accordance with site-specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The location where illumination measurement is required is selected in accordance with measurement specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Possible risk and influence on accurate illumination levels at the selected location is identified and dealt with in terms of measurement specifications and workplace conditions.

    The required personal protective equipment is used in accordance with its design and specified requirements.

    Use includes the checking of availability, examination, in working order, fit for purpose.

    The Luxmeter is used in accordance with manufacturer's specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Conditions that may influence the accuracy of readings are dealt with in accordance with measurement requirements and worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The illumination levels are measured according to measurement specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The results are recorded in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The surrounding area is continuously assessed and hazards and risks are dealt with in accordance with specified requirements.

    The Luxmeter is cleaned and stored in accordance with manufacturer's specifications and site-specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A defective Luxmeter is reported and dealt with in accordance with worksite specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Reports are completed and submitted in accordance with legal and site-specific requirements.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
