PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of Automotive repair and maintenance require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of carrying out a general automotive service to maintain the vehicle in an operational condition and will have an understanding of preventative maintenance principles. This unit standard may be used in the context of one or more of the following areas of specialisation:
  • Passenger vehicle.
  • Commercial vehicle.
  • Earthmoving equipment.
  • Lift truck.
  • Motor cycle.
  • Engine fitter.

    This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression and is a foundational unit standard for a motor mechanic. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that the learner has already learned the use of engineering hand tools, power tools, and measuring equipment and to maintain a safe and productive working environment.

    Learners are also assumed to be competent in Mathematical literacy and Communication at NQF Level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The ranges as indicated under the Specific Outcomes determine the scope and level of this unit standard. All work is performed under supervision and according to workplace and workshop manual specifications and occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.

    Plan and prepare for servicing a vehicle.

  • Planning includes obtaining service data, tools, equipment, parts and fluids.
  • Preparing includes cleaning of automotive system/s. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The service to be conducted is identified from given documentation and manufacturer recommendations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Documentation includes job cards, customer requests and manufacturer service schedules.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All tools and equipment required to perform the service are prepared for use and ensured to be available prior to commencing with the service. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Service replacement parts required are identified and confirmed to be available prior to commencing with the service. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Reported faults are confirmed by means of a pre-operational check. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Consequences of continuing with the service when all requirements are not available are described in terms of productivity and utilization of workshop space. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Perform the service on the vehicle. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Servicing includes pre-delivery, daily inspections and routine services.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The service is conducted in accordance with service schedule and manufacturers recommendations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The purpose of conducting a routine service is described in terms of manufacturer warranty and vehicle reliability. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Fluids are drained and refilled according to workshop manual procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Fluids are examined for contamination in accordance with workshop procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Workshop procedures may include physical examination or sending to a laboratory for analysis.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Tools and equipment are used in accordance with workshop procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Any faults are noted and dealt with in accordance with workshop procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Faults include worn, damaged, faulty or leaking parts. Workshop procedures may include repairing, replacing or reporting.

    Apply quality checks on a completed service.

  • Quality checks include confirmation of conformance to the service schedule.
  • Confirmation includes visual inspection for system leaks and operational performance.

    The vehicle is visually inspected for leaks and a post operational check is performed according to workshop procedures.

    All fluid levels are inspected and confirmed to be in accordance with manufacturer specifications.

    Reasons for post service checks are explained in terms of quality control and customer satisfaction.

    Quality check points are identified in terms of their function and checking procedures.

  • Safety includes using personal protective equipment, adhering to workshop manual warnings and dispose of hazardous materials.

    The service is completed without incident, accident or injury in accordance with SHE procedures and legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All safety warnings and required actions before, during and after vehicle servicing are adhered to according to workshop safety manuals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Applicable SHE procedures are followed during the service. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Restore work area, complete and process documentation. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Restoring work area includes disposal of hazardous materials, tools and equipment packed away, work area cleaned.
  • Documentation includes completing job cards, check lists and reports.
