PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners accredited with this standard will be able to glaze steel and wood after preparing for it. Learners will become acquainted with the various steel and wood frames. Learners will work safely and complete the glazing on-site in most cases. It is assumed that the steel/wooden structure is already in place before it is glazed.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Confirm job/customer requirements for glazing of wood/steel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Opening sizes are measured/re-measured on site to confirm measurements prior to starting work. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Customer requirements/preferences are confirmed prior to glazing the system. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Requirements and preferences include but are not limited to type of glass, specific installation arrangements.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Building regulations and SANS standards are checked to ensure safety of the proposed glazing. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Conformity to SANS codes include SANS 10137 and in conjunction with 10400 which is Regulation Part N 2006 Edition 3 and regulations of the Association of Architectural Aluminium Manufacturers of South Africa (AAAMSA).

    All safety requirements are complied with in the preparation phase and glazing phase.

    Safety requirements include the correct use of personal protective clothing.

    Windload limitations are calculated as per the system to be installed.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The glass is measured and cut according to size and thickness. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Cutting excludes 10mm glass and laminates.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The glass is polished to ensure that it is fit for glazing purposes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Existing or damaged glass and putty is removed and the surface is prepared as per procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Preparation is completed according to manufacturer's instruction. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes but is not limited to the preparation of putty, and use of material to remove rust.

    Scaffolding/harness is used to perform the installation if required.

    The installation is checked as per procedure to ensure quality workmanship.

    The glass and the customer's premises are cleaned and maintained to ensure customer satisfaction and service.
