People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications.

A competent learner will be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the importance of testing vehicles.
  • Test functionality of vehicle systems and components in static conditions.
  • Test for water leaks.
  • Test functionality of vehicle systems and components in dynamic conditions.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    This unit standard is one of a series of unit standards for vehicle manufacturers the field of manufacturing and engineering. It is assumed that the learner is already competent to:
  • Select, use and care for engineering hand tools.
  • Select, use and care for engineering measuring equipment.
  • Keep the work area safe and productive.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following range information is applicable to the entire unit standard:
  • All work is performed under supervision at regular intervals and according to workplace specifications and occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.
  • Tests include "Roller Test", "Water Test" and "Yard Test".
  • A valid driver's licence, or OEM acceptable alternative, is a prerequisite for entering into this unit standard.

    Legal requirements for testing vehicles are identified and explained in terms of relevant legislation and the impact on safety of personnel and protection of the environment.

    The importance of rectifying faults is described in terms of ensuring no comebacks from customers and ongoing brand satisfaction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Reasons for various testing reports are described in terms of vehicle history.

    Methods of testing the functionality of components are identified that are suited to the available equipment and the components in a given situation.

    Consequences of not leaving the workplace in the appropriate state are explained in terms of safety hazards and production. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.
