PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to procure labour, monitor the performance of team members and provide on-job training and coaching. These competencies complement the other core supervisory competencies and contribute to the development of a professional community of Civil Engineering Construction Supervisors.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Identifying labour requirements.
  • Recruiting, selecting and inducting team members.
  • Supervising work team and monitoring performance.
  • Training, coaching and developing team members. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematical literacy at NQF Level 3.

    Construction teams include, but are not limited to:
  • Concreting, masonry, plumbing, carpentry, tiling, plastering, general road finishing and paving teams.

    Performance of team members are monitored and corrective action is taken in terms of a simulation and/or case study.

  • Counseling, Initiation of disciplinary action and Referral of the problem to immediate manager.

    Feedback to team members is provided in terms of workplace performance according to organizational procedures.

    Workplace skills of team members are evaluated to identify knowledge and skills gaps according to specific trade requirements.

    On-job training and coaching schedule is compiled in terms of identified re-skilling and up skilling requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Mentoring is conducted in terms of re-skilling and up-skilling requirements.

    Skills development of team members are monitored according to the re-skilling and up-skilling requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
