PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to calculate quantities for the purpose of computing quantities of materials required to complete a job cost effectively, identify plant and human resource required and use these calculations to develop a work plan. These competencies complement the other core supervisory competencies and contribute to the development of a professional community of Civil Engineering Construction Supervisors.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Analysing project documentation to establish quantities.
  • Calculating the required material quantities.
  • Estimating the required human and equipment resources.
  • Preparing a work plan.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematical literacy at NQF Level 3.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Analyse project documentation to establish quantities.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Drawings are interpreted in relation to contract/project documentation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Bills of Quantities are interpreted in relation to contract/project documentation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Project specifications are integrated with drawings, bills of quantities and general conditions of contract according to organizational procedures.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Calculate the required material quantities.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Correct units of measurement are identified for the different types of material specified in terms of the project specification.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Quantities of required materials are calculated taking into account material manufacturer specifications, material properties and work area size.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Estimate the required human and equipment resources.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Production rates for human and equipment resources are determined for the activities and quantities involved according to organizational procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Human resource requirements are computed in terms of quantities calculated and project specifications/time frames.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Equipment resource requirements are computed in terms of quantities calculated and project specifications/time frames.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
    Prepare a work plan.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Time frames for work activities are calculated according to project specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
A work plan is developed according to the project specifications and time frames.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Work plan is communicated to management according to organizational procedures.
