PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills, values and knowledge required by people in the sub-field of Forestry and/or wood technology who must be able to prepare and load lumber drying kiln according to prescribed procedure.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Follow procedures to prepare the kiln to receive a load of lumber to dry.
  • Position the kiln trolley with load correctly to facilitate loading.
  • Apply load restraining devices, where relevant.
  • Load and position the trolley with load in a kiln and shut the kiln door.

    A learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate competency in Communication and Mathematical skills at ABET NQF Level 3 or equivalent.

    Follow procedures to prepare the kiln to receive a load of lumber to dry.

    Baffles, measuring instruments for heat, humidity, m.c. measurement where relevant. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Procedure to follow in preparing the kiln to receive a load of lumber is explained according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The necessary pre-checks are conducted on the kiln to ensure correct temperature and humidity according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The necessary settings on the auxiliary equipment are done according to company's procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Position the kiln trolley with load correctly to facilitate loading. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Kiln trolley includes traverse, pulleys, winches and cables, trolley attachment for pulling cable. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Trolley with lumber is correctly positioned to allow smooth loading into the kiln according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Pulleys, traverse, winches and cables are checked to ensure good working order according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Kiln trolley is positioned according to company's procedure to ease the loading process. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Apply load restraining devices, where relevant. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Lifting equipment and weights, levered spring devices.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Lifting equipment is operated to facilitate the loading process according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Levered spring devices are used to facilitate loading according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Control mechanism is used to control the loading process according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The load restraining devices are applied correctly to ensure minimal distortion in the dried lumber according to standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Load and position the trolley with load in a kiln and shut the kiln door.

    Measuring instruments are attached according to standard operating procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Baffles are closed as per company's procedures.

    Kiln door is shut according to company's procedure. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 4 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency. Only an Assessor with suitable first hand experience in process operations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.

    Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
