People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Prepare the lumber drying kiln for removal of the trolley with stack of dried lumber.
  • Move trolley with dried lumber stack from kiln to cooling shed.
  • Park trolley with stack of dried lumber in cooling shed and remove the pulling equipment and the load restraining devices/weights (at the correct time) where relevant.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Move trolley with dried lumber stack from kiln to cooling shed.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Trolley include pull hooks, cables, pulleys, winches, traverse, cooling shed.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The removal of lumber stack from kilns to cooling shed is done with according to company's operating procedure.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The temperature for the drying of the kilns is estimated according to standard operating procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The load is determined according to the loading capacity of the stacking board.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The estimated time for removal of the stack to the cooling shed is determined as per schedule.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Park trolley with stack of dried lumber in cooling shed.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Loaded trolley movement equipment, cooling shed facilities, load restraining weights/devices.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The trolley with its load of dried lumber is correctly prepared for movement to the de-stacking after the prescribed cooling off period is specified according to schedule.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The process of parking the loaded trolley, removing the pulling equipment as well as the load restraining devices/weights at the correct time is demonstrated according to prescribed method.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Methods and equipment to unload and move stack tray with dried lumber is justified according to worksite procedures.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 4 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency. Only an Assessor with suitable first hand experience in process operations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE
Embedded knowledge is reflected in the Assessment Criteria for each Specific Outcome and must be assessed in its own right, through oral and written evidence. Observation can not be the only evidence. However the following can be integrated in the assessment:
  • Communication and mathematical knowledge and skills equivalent to NQF Level 2 requirements.
  • Workplace procedures, safety and health measures and environmental management principles relevant to NQF Level 2 activities in lumber drying, and basic knowledge of the drying defects that can occur in lumber, and how to minimize them.

    Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO):

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO IDENTIFYING
The learner is able to identify and solve problems in which responses show that responsible decisions using critical and creative thinking have been applied. This is when they determine the time and speed for the removal and movement of the timber from the kilns to the cooling shed.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO WORKING
This will be demonstrated when a learner works effectively with others as a member of the team when they unload and de-stack timber from the trolleys.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO ORGANISING
This will be displayed when the learner applies the principles of health and safety to ensure that harm to both other workers and the environment is avoided.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING
The learner is able to collect, organize and critically evaluate information by selecting the appropriate equipment when uploading and de-stacking hot timber from the kilns.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO SCIENCE
The learner is able to use science and technology effectively by identifying the rationale for the removal of timber from kilns to cooling shed on time. The learner is also able to determine the impact this can have on production if this is not done according to schedule.
