PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to conduct a learning experience for the community (groups and/or individuals) as a means of developing opportunities for the transfer of learning according to the identified needs and objectives of the specific community. The standard aims to develop persons capable of conducting learning experiences that will enhance the participants` physical, social, emotional and intellectual capacities in a safe environment, and will benefit the programme facilitators, participants and the community as a whole.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Describing the role of the facilitator in a specific context.
  • Promoting and encouraging a participatory learning environment.
  • Using a variety of facilitation styles and approaches.
  • Evaluating group learning processes within the organisation.

    Personal strengths required in the facilitator are identified in terms of obtaining best results for a given community. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Potential fears and vulnerabilities of a facilitator are identified in terms of their causes and ways of dealing with them. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A variety of situations in which learning can be facilitated are identified and discussed and a suitable facilitation style is selected for the context.

    Promote and encourage a participatory learning environment.

    Group dynamics are identified and discussed in terms of understanding potential challenges and ways/strategies to engage with different situations.

    A variety of facilitation styles and approaches are described in terms of how and when they should be used in order to create an environment conducive to learning and that meets the needs of participants. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Participants are actively listened to and their contributions affirmed to gain acceptance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Group participation is motivated and encouraged with the aim of gaining meaningful involvement of participants, taking into consideration group dynamics.

    Questions are used to enhance and encourage involvement and understanding of participants.

    Tools and techniques to monitor and evaluate group learning processes are explained and an appropriate tool is selected for the purpose of evaluating the facilitation and learning process in terms of the outcomes achieved. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding in place with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding in place with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding in place with the relevant ETQA.
