PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner achieving this unit standard will be able to use a broad knowledge of South Africa and a local area to enhance a tourist's experience of South Africa. This will enable the enhancement of the local or international tourist's image of the country and its tourism services.

The learner who achieves the credits for this unit standard will be able to apply knowledge of South Africa to support the design of tourism experiences to the benefit of tourists and participants in tourism and related activities.

This versatile unit standard is likely to be useful for anyone in tourism whose work relies for its success on a good level of background information on South Africa. Guides, information officers, tour agents, operators, tourist guides and marketers should all benefit, with consequent advantage to the sub field as a whole.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Use information on South Africa and/or a local area to design a tourism experience in the area of operation.
  • Utilise the ability to maintain currency of knowledge to enhance service levels and the tourism experience.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Knowledge of a site or local area is compiled to identify prominent attractions and interests relevant to the area of operation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Area of operation includes but is not limited to nature, culture or adventure tours, guided activities, as well as the context and location as it might apply to the tourism experience.
  • Knowledge includes but is not limited to socio economical, historical, socio political, terrain.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Consolidated information is used to assist tourists to plan their visit according to needs and requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An itinerary is designed based on identified interests, needs and requirements as it applies to the area of operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A travel plan is designed and costed to incorporate the required attractions in support of the itinerary. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Logistical arrangements are concluded according to the travel plan and designed tourism experience.

    Utilise the ability to maintain currency of knowledge to enhance service levels and the tourism experience.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Credible sources of information are accessed to provide clients with up-to-date information on the tour route, activity, site or area to be visited. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    For "sources of information" includes but is not limited to radio, television, libraries, newspapers, industry publications, tourism brochures and flyers, Internet, discussions with area experts or knowledgeable persons.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Information relevant to the area of operation is sourced and presented so as to demonstrate the retrieval of relevant and up to date information. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    For "Information relevant to the area" includes but is not limited to: traditional food, state of the road, current cultural events, current national issues, facts of interest, historical context.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Enhance a tourism experience through the use of source information. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Information as it applies to the area of operation is interpreted for clients so as to enhance service levels, tourism experience and their experience of South Africa. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    For "information interpretation" includes but is not limited to current local or regional, controversial, political, socio-economic, actions taken in the country on current issues.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Information is applied to pre-empt alternative arrangement requirements in order to enhance service levels. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    For "information" includes but is not limited to: changes in weather, specified interests expressed by clients, itinerary adjustment requirements due to unexpected situations.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Adjustments to arrangements are concluded according to requirements in support of service levels and the tourism experience. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    For "adjustments" includes but is not limited to the tour route, the itinerary, alternative bookings, accommodation, activities, arrangements, cancellations, approval requirements and agreement from relevant parties regarding adjustments.

    Communicate with clients to enable a positive tourism experience.

    Adjustments applicable to the tourism experience is communicated to clients to maintain service levels.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Clients are advised on appropriate behaviour, conduct and protocol as it applies to the tourism experience. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Homes, cemeteries, battlefields, heritage sites, places of worship, fauna and flora in natural habitats, sites of cultural interest, littering, cultural sensitivity, permission for taking of photographs.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Clients are advised on personal safety and security issues as they apply to the tourism experience. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    For "personal safety and security" includes but is not limited to group sizes, personal belongings, unsafe areas and activities, awareness of local health issues such as medical (malaria), drinking water, food.
