PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons who either dry finish or form finish garments after the cleaning process in an industrial or commercial laundry context. Learners credited with this unit standard are able to dry and finish garments using a steam or air cabinet to form and finish garments.

Qualifying learners are able to:
  • Prepare garments for steam or air cabinet finishing.
  • Finish garments using steam or air cabinet process.
  • Perform end of task procedures.

    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1 or the equivalent.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare garments for steam or air cabinet finishing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Care labels and symbols on garments to be finished in a steam or air cabinet are interpreted in terms of the impact of the steam or air cabinet finishing process on the garment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Faults in the condition of the garments when presented for the steam or air cabinet finishing process are explained in terms of how the finished condition of the garments is affected. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Garments are checked prior to the steam or air cabinet finishing process for damage and foreign objects. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Items not suitable for steam or air cabinet finishing are redirected to the appropriate location. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Equipment is checked before use to ensure it is safe and ready to use.

    Finish garments using steam or air cabinet process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Garments are secured, straightened and clamped on the appropriate garment former (dolly) prior to activating the steam or air finishing controls and according to operating instructions and worksite procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Adjustments to the steam pressure, air flow and timers is made according to the requirements of the garment and or fabric. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Machines are operated according to manufacturer's instructions and worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Garments are unloaded and placed on hangers ready for folding or distribution according to industry and or worksite procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Perform end of task procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Garments that have been finished using the steam or air cabinet finishing process are inspected and unsatisfactory garments are removed and redirected in accordance with industry and or worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Garments are directed for dispatch according to steam or air finishing worksite procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Faulty equipment is reported according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Problems identified during the steam or air cabinet finishing process are reported in accordance with the worksite procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Routine maintenance of equipment is implemented according to the manufacturer's instructions, preventative maintenance and worksite procedures.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA`s policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
