PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons who work in the laundry industry who either dry finish or form finish garments after the cleaning process. Learners credited with this unit standard are able to dry, finish, inspect and fold garments using a tunnel finisher that uses steam or air to form and finish garments.

Qualifying learners are able to:
  • Prepare garments for steam or air tunnel finishing.
  • Dry-finish garments using a tunnel finisher.
  • Perform end of task procedures.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare garments for steam or air tunnel finishing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The care labels and symbols on garments to be finished through a steam or air tunnel finisher are explained in terms of the effect of the tunnel finisher on the garment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Types of fibres and fabrics are described in terms of their reaction to heat and how they must be dealt with during the finishing process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Faults in the condition of the garments when presented for tunnel finishing and faults in the operation of the tunnel finisher process are explained in terms of how the finished condition of garments are affected. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Garments are checked prior to feeding into the tunnel finisher. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Items not suitable for tunnel finishing are redirected to the appropriate location. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Garments are dressed on the garment hangers in preparation for feeding into the tunnel finisher. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Equipment is checked before use to ensure it is safe and ready to use. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Dry finish garments using tunnel finisher. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The appropriate speeds and drying temperatures are explained in terms of the effect on the garments, productivity and the dryness after completing the tunnel finishing process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Garments are loaded onto the tunnel finisher delivery conveyor according to worksite procedure and manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Garments are dried at the correct speed and temperature. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Adjustments to the steam pressure, air flow and feed conveyor speed are made according to the requirements of the garment and or fabric. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Fire hazards in the tunnel finisher are explained in terms of garments falling off the hanger inside the tunnel or the residual soiling remaining on the garment(s) after washing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Garments that have been dried satisfactory are directed to the discharge rails to be either manually or automatically folded or redirected to the appropriate delivery rail. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Tunnel finisher and or feed or take-off mechanism malfunctioning is stopped in accordance with worksite procedures and manufacturer's instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Perform end of task procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Garments that have been tunnel finished are inspected and unsatisfactory garments are removed and redirected in accordance with worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Garments are directed for dispatch according to worksite procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Faulty equipment is reported according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Problems identified during the tunnel finishing dry and form-finish process are reported in accordance with the worksite procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Routine maintenance of equipment is implemented according to the manufacturer's instructions, preventative maintenance and worksite procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA`s policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
