PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons who work in the laundry environment and who are responsible for receiving laundry items, collected from the customer and sorting soiled items for the cleaning process. Learners credited with this unit standard are able to receive, sort, classify and batch items to be laundered.

Qualifying learners are able to:
  • Describe the factors that influence the sorting processes.
  • Receive items to be laundering.
  • Prepare items for laundering.

    Describe the factors that influence the laundry sorting processes.

    The factors that influence the sorting process are listed in terms of their impact on laundering. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The care labels and symbols on laundry items are explained in terms of precautions or procedures required during the laundry process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The types of fibres and fabrics are described in terms of their reaction to the laundry process and suitability for laundering and or dry cleaning. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The types of stains and soiling are described in terms of the cleaning method, contamination risks and action to be taken in dealing with them. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The types of trims and accessories are described in terms of action to be taken during the laundering and or dry cleaning process. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Receive items to be laundered. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Receiving may include but not limited to items brought to the laundry by the customer, and items, batches of items, collected from the customer's premises for transfer to the laundry.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Soiled items to be laundered are received from relevant parties for cleaning in accordance with worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Received items, condition of the items, customer's details and requirements are recorded using the correct documentation, and according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Received items are recorded according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Items that cannot go through the wash process are re-routed according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Customers are advised of factors that will affect the cleaning outcome and process.

    Additional laundry-related services are offered to customers in accordance with worksite procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is used in accordance with the worksite procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Contaminated textiles and clothing are handled in terms of good health and safety practice in the laundry environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Items requiring pre-wash stain removal or other specialized treatment are batched according to worksite procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Loads are made up and batched taking type of fabric, cleaning process, machine capacity and priorities into account and in accordance with the worksite procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Implications of incorrect batching items are explained in terms of the effect on the item, the effect on other items, machinery, operational costs, lost production and customer satisfaction.

    Laundry items are protected from hazards, damage and theft. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA`s policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.

    UNIT STANDARD NOTES 
    Definition of terms within this unit standard:
  • Batch/Classify/classification refers to the grouping together of items of similar fibre content, type, degree and type of soiling according to company procedures and requirements.
  • Dry-cleaning refers to the removal of soiling, staining and other undesirable substances from a textile via the use of a solvent and detergent.
  • Garments refers to any textile item that is normally used as apparel or clothing.
  • Laundering refers to the removal of soiling, staining and other undesirable substances from a textile via the use of water and detergent.
  • Make up loads refers to placing into suitable designated containers the appropriate weight of soiled textiles suitable for processing in the washing/cleaning machinery available.
  • Sort refers to verifying item quantities according to their description and customer documentation and ensuring all items are uniquely marked/identified for each customer.
  • Textiles refers to all fabrics submitted for cleaning to the laundry.
